Success Stories & Testimonials

Abu
Abu is a big part of why I became a dog trainer. He inspired my passion for helping people better understand their dogs—especially rescue dogs—and build the trust, communication, and partnership needed to create a strong bond.
Abu was my own dog. Before finding his way to New Hampshire, he had endured a difficult life on the streets of Puerto Rico. I met him after he arrived at the animal shelter where I worked. At that point, I had already spent four years working in animal welfare and had developed a special love for the dogs who needed a little more time, patience, and understanding than most.
Abu checked every one of those boxes. He was fearful and defensive when handled, highly reactive to other dogs, and struggled with resource guarding. It was clear that he wouldn’t thrive in just any home—but I knew he belonged in mine.
I brought Abu home in January 2019, and I was incredibly fortunate to spend nearly seven years by his side. He lived with me and our growing family of pets until August 2025, when he passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Life with Abu wasn’t always easy. He challenged me to become a better trainer, a better advocate, and a more patient person. He taught me the importance of management, thoughtful environmental modifications, and meeting a dog where they are rather than expecting them to fit into our world overnight. As we worked together, built trust, and learned to communicate, the behaviors that once felt overwhelming became manageable. More importantly, Abu learned that he was safe and that he could rely on me to help him navigate situations that once terrified him.
Abu taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my career: dog training isn’t just about teaching dogs—it’s about teaching people. Lasting behavior change happens when both ends of the leash learn together. When owners understand why their dogs behave the way they do and are given the tools to communicate clearly and consistently, even significant behavioral challenges can improve.
Not every dog will become a social butterfly, and not every challenge disappears completely. But with patience, understanding, and realistic expectations, dogs and their families can build a relationship based on trust instead of frustration.
That is the philosophy I bring to every training session. My goal isn’t just to teach obedience—it’s to help owners understand their dogs, strengthen their bond, and create a happier, more confident life together.
Thank you, Abu, for changing my life and showing me the trainer I was meant to become.
Dozer & Moose
Dozer joined Smith River Pet Care’s Bootcamp program alongside his littermate, Moose, when they were just five months old. Their owners wanted to give both puppies a strong foundation and set them on the path to becoming well-mannered, confident adult dogs.
Dozer came with a unique challenge—he was born blind. Because of this, his training looked a little different than Moose’s, with a focus on building confidence, body awareness, and trust while helping him safely navigate the world around him.
Today, both Dozer and Moose enjoy regular public outings to reinforce the skills they first learned at home. They are polite, handler-focused, and neutral in a variety of public settings. Thanks to his Bootcamp training, Dozer has gained the confidence to navigate uneven terrain, rocks, benches, and even the water with ease, proving that being blind doesn’t have to limit what a dog can achieve.

Zamboni
Zamboni began her training journey with Smith River Pet Care through our Bootcamp program and has made incredible progress! As a young rescue dog who came from a kennel environment, she struggled with excessive jumping, excitement, limited impulse control, and difficulty settling around distractions.
Through consistent, structured Bootcamp sessions, Zamboni has developed into a much calmer, more focused companion. She now enjoys regular training outings several times a week to practice and strengthen her skills in real-world environments. Her improved impulse control, ability to settle, neutrality in public, and strong focus on her handler are a testament to the power of consistent, positive training.
Betty
Betty’s family came to Smith River Pet Care for private training after adopting her. As a recent rescue, Betty struggled with anxiety around a variety of triggers. When she became overwhelmed, she would jump on people and use her mouth to seek attention, making it difficult for her family to help her through those moments.
Together, we developed a structured behavior modification plan that fit realistically into her family’s daily routine. By focusing on building Betty’s confidence, teaching alternative coping behaviors, and creating clear, consistent expectations, her inappropriate behaviors steadily decreased. Today, Betty is better equipped to manage her anxiety, feels more secure in her environment, and her family has the knowledge and confidence to support her continued success.

“Kristen has been taking care of our pets for the past 3 years. She had done check-ins while we have been away, and she also walks our dog weekly. Our dog is very anxious, but Kristen is the only person who can come to the door without her having a barking meltdown. Kristen is reliable, punctual, and I recommend her services to everyone!”

Xena, Roxy & Kitty Crew
Drop-in Services
“Kristen is great! I have been able to schedule drop-in visits via text which is super helpful for me in my chaotic day-to-day. She initially did a meet and greet to review our animal routines. She takes our dogs for walks over the course of a weekend and also spends a few minutes checking in our cats when needed as we are a Cattery, as well. She takes pictures of our pets to let me know everyone is doing great and so that I know everything is okay. She also will touch base a day or two prior to our visit to make sure we’re still on track, which, has been times where plans have changed last minute. I love when she visits because I know our animals are in great hands when we’re gone.”

Maze
Drop-in Services
“We were able to go to dinner and visit with friends without worrying about Maze. Kristen is very kind and patient and Maze can tell. Wonderful to have this service available.”

Carlins Weiner Haus

“To anyone looking for Pet care I can highly recommend Kristen. We have used her many times. She comes to our home 2 to 3 times a day when we are away and spends time with our dogs, feeds them, does poop patrol, cleans the pen, and runs them in the front yard. She’s amazing. She even took care of my newborn litter and their mama when we were in South Carolina. She is the absolute best. I highly recommend her.”

Atticus
Private Training Session
“Atticus did cardigan Sunday… his 4th mountain! Off Leash! Noah says he’s sweet and friendly with other hikers and dogs on the trails… he never jumps on them. He is really progressing, and we owe it to you and your wonderful advice! Thank you from us both!!!”

Ellie
Drop-in Services
“Kristen is amazing! Every moment, I knew Ellie was in the best possible hands. I couldn’t recommend Kristen enough and know first-hand how wonderful she is with animals as she was one of the folks at the Humane Society who helped with Ellie’s adoption process back in the day. I couldn’t imagine a better person to care for Ellie and the photo updates were amazing! Look no further if you want your fur baby to be spoiled and loved while you’re away!”
